Minimum Requirements
- Registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Registered Nurse/Midwife or equivalent NQF 7 qualifications.
- Relevant qualification within a specialist area
- Relevant experience in the nursing discipline
- Capacity to implement and maintain standards of health practice required from all accredited bodies and appropriate health legislation
Responsibilities
- Ensure Bill of Materials (picking slips) with correct references is always updated and available taking into consideration doctors’ preference and changes communicated to the stock controllers. Mo-Bit signed in daily and password always current and correct.
- Ensure consignment stock is well controlled, charged, the “pink” book completed timeously.
- Ensure all stock, gasses and scheduled medicines is charged appropriately using Mo-Bit, and the BOM sheet completed with correct procedure descriptions equivalent to peri-operative descriptions/ CareOn electronic system. Check on floor and anaesthetic staff to see they have charged all that was used by them as well.
- Ensure the Peri-Operative document/BOM/CareOn and theatre register are completed accurately and maintained.
- Intra- operative anaesthetic information printed and stapled into the peri-operative document/ downloaded into CareOn.
- Ensure best care always documentation is completed appropriately and placed in the patients file / uploaded on CareOn.
- Before May every year assist with completing relevant capital expenditure documentation and obtain quotations for instrumentation and or equipment that is beyond economical repair
- Practice patient care according to the Scope of Practice and assume total responsibility for these activities.
- Contribute to the holistic care of patients.
- Communicate effectively with patients regarding their care.
- Promote patients’ health and wellbeing.
- Practice the principles of infection prevention and all Standard precautions specifically in the event when patients with super bugs present themselves in theatre.
- Promote and maintain good public relations with patients and doctors.
- Execute all procedures according to hospital theatre standards.
- Refer all complaints from patients and doctors to the Unit Manager
- Carry out all departmental duties as assigned by the Unit Manager
- Over see and manage issued scheduled medicines in theatre in accordance with the Netcare policy.
- Perform other duties as reasonably requested by the Unit Manager or senior member of staff.
- Participate in the theatre’s quality improvement programme.
- Adhere to Netcare medical waste management principles, ensure safe swab system implemented
- Effective risk prevention and management, incidents investigated, and relevant documentation completed.
- Maintain a therapeutic, clean, and safe environment that is free from medico-legal hazards.
- Maintain Set Policies and Standards regarding Surgical Pause, surgical swab, and sharp count.
- Adhere to the Netcare Resuscitation and Reanimation policy.
- Maintain a safe working environment in accordance with the Machinery and Occupational Safety Act
- Report and act upon potential/actual risks identified.
- Responsible for ensuring correct use, cleaning, and storage of equipment.
- Report equipment needing repair or replacement to the Unit Manager
- Maintain professional conduct and standards at all times in accordance with hospital policies and procedures.
- Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
- Adhere to the bare below elbow principles i.e. no dangling earrings, necklaces, false nails, nail polish, wrist watches, one wedding band may be worn, to be removed when scrubbed
- No cell phones in theatres
- The Professional Scrub Nurse/Clinical Nurse is a professional who remains responsible for the assessment, planning, and implementation of individualised, holistic, and person-centred nursing care of a patient, their families, or the community, either performed directly or indirectly.
- The incumbent ultimately coordinates patient care within the concept of the multi-disciplinary health team.
- The incumbent also fulfils the role using scientifically based nursing theories and processes, treating the patients as a physical, social, and spiritual individual, and by use of educational and technical means applicable to health care practice.
- The Scrub Registered Nurse will be responsible for the wellbeing of the patient intra operatively, assessment of the patient to ensure delivery of high-quality care to patients whilst in theatre, in accordance with hospital standards and policies and is a role model in the delivery of evidence-based care.
- Will be responsible for the preparation /checking /control and charging of stock / supervision and maintenance of instrumentation and equipment.
- Timeously complete capital expenditure documentation as per doctor’s preferences where appliable.
- The incumbent is responsible for and is held accountable for his/her own acts and omissions. Theatre activities form part of the planned operational requirements.
- The incumbent will further be responsible and actively participate in Clinical Governance.
